According to Shohreh Aghdashloo who plays one of the lead characters in The Expanse, filming of Season 3 has completed. Yippee, just got to wait many months now before it is available in the UK.
Whilst I was reading the December issue of The MagPi I spotted an article about Rapanui Clothing based on the Isle of Wight. They make eco friendly clothing and were started in 2008, I have been following them on and off for about the same time, being initially impressed by their Bamboo T-shirts that were as smooth as silk.
There is a link to their web site in my list of links down the right hand side of this blog.
So why did Rapanui feature in a magazine devoted to the best selling computer in the world (the Raspberry Pi)?
Turns out that they started on a budget of £200 in 2008 and since then have grown greatly. They now have a factory in an old Coop supermarket and have developed a lot of their own custom manufacturing hardware using Raspberry Pi's. They even have an Alexa that employees can ask questions about production runs and other factory stuff. The really cool thing is that they even encourage employees to learn programming!
So basically it is an eco company that is driving innovation and changing the rules.

A blog about lovely Waterlooville, a small, environmentally damaged town in Hampshire, UK. Waterlooville was founded after the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, as troops from that conflict returned home and passed through Hampshire. Having grown from a small village to a suburban sprawl, Waterlooville faces serious environmental challenges today and in the future.

Day trip to Bembridge

Bembridge village centre |
Decided to take a day trip over to the Isle of Wight using the hovercraft service. The passenger capacity on the original SRN6 hovercraft in the 1960s/70s was quite small, so I was pleasantly surprised to see how big the passenger cabin was. Despite the passenger waiting area being quite full (I wondered if we all would get on), once everyone was onboard, there were still about 2/3 of the seats free.

Hovercraft 'birthed' at Ryde terminal |
The experience of travelling in the new hovercraft was similar to that of the old SRN6, but I think the new vessels are quieter.
The trip over to Ryde from Southsea was quite smooth and quick. The trip back was a bit choppy so the ride was a bit bumpy.
However compared to my bus journey on the island, the hovercraft was generally smoother!

Shelter with seats removed |
From the hovercraft terminal at Ryde it's a short distance to the bus station and the long Ryde pier.
Along the pier the old style Victorian shelters were still present (maybe modern replicas?), but the seats have been removed and access around the shelters is blocked! Plus there are ''No Fishing" signs on the shelter windows.
I guess they had problems in the past with youths and others? Still seems like a great shame to not have seats. Another issue maybe that cars can drive along the pier to the car park on the piers ferry terminal, so maybe seats would be a safety issue?

Holy Trinity Church, Bembridge |
Wow! That was a rollercoaster ride. The islands roads are full of pot holes and the tarmac in some places is non existent. On top of that, the roads haven't changed a lot since I was last there, so it was a very hilly and meandering journey.
But great fun! If you want to see the island in all it's architectural glory, take a bus and sit at the front on the top deck.

Bembridge windmill |
After looking around the village centre it was time to visit the windmill which is now owned by the National Trust. It's a great example and I was told that they get it working occasionally to make sure the mechanism is in working order. At the entrance kiosk, they sell tickets for the windmill, ice creams and gifts. There are also plenty of walks in the area.

New Isle of Wight offshore wind farm
Good news today about the 3rd round UK offshore wind farm plans. One of the wind farms will be just South of the Isle of Wight and along the Dorset coast. Although not the biggest 3rd round planned wind farm, it will still have the capacity of about 1 typical coal or nuclear power station, about 0.9 gigawatts. By the time work gets under way, it is likely the larger 5 to 10 megawatt turbines should be more common, requiring fewer turbines in total. We'll have to see.
The 3rd round wind farm projects will be the biggest increase in generation capacity the UK has seen since the end of World War Two. Some 32 gigawatts built in about 4 years. If the 1st and 2nd round projects are included, there will be over 40 gigawatts of offshore capacity installed.
An additional issue is that Siemens are currently looking to locate a new turbine factory in Europe. Hopefully, confirmation of the third round contracts will persuade them to locate it in the UK.
It is likely that towards the end of the decade, we should also see a number of tidal turbine farms constructed as well. Although providing less capacity, the tidal turbines should provide more engineering jobs for home grown UK companies.

Save Vesta Isle of Wight factory
Despite the fact that we need as much renewable energy as we can get, the Vesta factory on the Isle of Wight is due to close. Yet the government is happy to subsidise car production with a £2000 hand out for new car purchases. Sign the No 10 Petition to help stop the Vesta factory closure.
